SUPERVISING PUMPING STATION OPERATOR
DEFINITION:
Under direction, supervises and works with a group of employees engaged in operating, adjusting, regulating, and maintaining water and/or sewage pumping station equipment used for the conveyance, transmission, or distribution of wastewater for treatment or disposal and/or the transfer of raw water to a treatment plant and/or the distribution of treated water to residential, commercial, or industrial establishments; does other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in operating equipment such as pumps, valves, turbines, and electric motors to transfer, distribute, and regulate pressure and flow of raw and processed water to treatment plants and/or to residential, commercial, and industrial establishments.
Supervises and works with employees engaged in the performance of the following tasks:
Operating, adjusting, regulating, and maintaining pumping station equipment such as pumps, regulators, chlorinators, communicators, and flow meters that transfer water from reservoirs to treatment plants and from plants to residential, commercial, and industrial establishments, or to transfer sewage from homes, industrial, or commercial establishments to sewage treatment plants..
Taking periodic readings of relevant gauges such as flow meters, pressure gauges, gas meters, thermometer, and other recording equipment and recording these readings.
Cleaning bar screens and removing sludge from drying beds.
Cleaning and adjusting filter bed spraying nozzles.
Cleaning and maintaining the pumping station and surrounding grounds.
Loading, lifting, and moving supplies and equipment.
Reading flowmeters and gauges to regulate equipment according to water consumption and demand.
Inspecting equipment to detect malfunctions such as pump leaks or worn bearings.
Repairing, replacing, and lubricating equipment.
Reviews performance of employees and determines assignments so as to use each to the best of their ability, and achieve objectives of low cost and good quality of work output.
Supervises and leads activities of employees so as to attain optimum results in terms of cost, quality, and morale of the group.
Provides instruction and development opportunities for personnel, communicating agency policies and other pertinent information.
Maintains sound standards of job performance for subordinates, and inspires and requires good performance.
Takes appropriate action when employees excel, meet, or fall below sound standards.
Handles personal relationship with employees such as interviewing, transferring, disciplining, and so forth by applying sound supervisory and leadership skills.
Carries out agency policies and programs as they apply to the unit, performs special assignments, and prepares reports with recommendations.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
Three (3) years of experience in operating, adjusting, regulating, and repairing pumps, valves, compressors, and other equipment used for conveyance, transmission, distribution, or treatment of water or wastewater. LICENSE:
Applicants may be required to possess a current, valid license of the appropriate class issued by the New Jersey Environmental Protection to operate a: Public Wastewater Collections System (C); Public Wastewater Treatment System (S); Public Water Treatment System (T) and/or Public Water Distribution System (W). Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of procedures used in operating, adjusting, and regulating pumping station valves and equipment.
Knowledge of methods used in keeping work and surrounding areas cleaned and maintained.
Knowledge of supervisory principles and techniques.
Ability to work harmoniously with others.
Ability to analyze pumping equipment operational problems and determine appropriate solutions or the need for repair to such equipment.
Ability to give assignments and instructions to subordinates.
Ability to provide subordinates with needed advice and assistance when difficult and unusual problems arise and check their work to see that proper procedures are followed, reasonable standards of output are maintained, and desired objectives are achieved.
Ability to understand the significance of and interpret readings of various gauges.
Ability to maintain essential records and files.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

SEWER REPAIRER SUPERVISOR
DEFINITION:
Under general direction, supervises employees engaged in cleaning, construction, maintenance, and repair of storm and sanitary sewers, catch basins, and other drainage facilities; does other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Supervises assigned staff and plans, organizes, and implements projects within the unit.
Supervises cleaning of storm water, sanitary sewer and sewer catch basin.
Supervises repair of broken sewer lines and installation of new sewer pipes.
Assesses parts and ensures replacement.
Keeps records of attendance, time spent on projects, and completed work.
Obtains, stores, safeguards, and supervises the use of equipment, materials, and supplies.
Investigates complaints and accidents; ensures corrective action is taken.
Establishes work schedules.
Inspects work and ensures adherence to proper procedures and safety standards.
Coordinates emergency repairs.
Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs and has responsibility for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting and/or disciplining of employees.
Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
Four (4) years of experience in sewer installation or repair work and/or in varied plumbing work and/or in the operation and maintenance of sewer maintenance equipment, one (1) year of which shall have been in a lead worker capacity.
LICENSE:
Appointees may be required to possess a valid water and/or wastewater operator license of the appropriate class, depending on the permit level of the facility, issued by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. The appointing authority is responsible for the verification of the license.
Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.
NOTE: The responsibility for ensuring that employees possess the required motor vehicle license, commensurate with the class and type of vehicles they operate, rests with the Appointing Authority.
