Job Specification

 REPAIRER BREATHING EQUIPMENT

 DEFINITION:

       Under direction, maintains and repairs self-contained breathing
  equipment used in the fighting of fires and provides training to fire
  fighters in the proper use of this equipment;  performs related work 
  as required.

  EXAMPLES OF WORK:

       Dismantles breathing equipment, masks, regulators, valves, etc.,
  and provides routine maintenance and repairs in order to assure their
  proper operations.

       Overhauls components of the equipment by replacing defective parts
  and adjusting the equipment and its parts to standards as indicated by
  its manufacturers.

       Performs periodic inspections of the equipment as assigned to the
  various units to ensure the equipment is used and is operating property
  and that it meets the necessary safety standards.

       Maintains records and files on the equipment and its parts noting
  the dates, types of repair and inspections, and condition of the
  equipment.

       Operates and provides maintenance and repairs as needed to
  equipment used to fill air tanks under pressure, such as compressors,
  valves, holding tanks, etc.

       Plans and conducts periodic training sessions and drills for
  firefighters on the proper and safe use of the breathing equipment in
  the fighting of fires.

       Classifies, stores and maintains inventory on parts and equipment
  and provides information necessary for the ordering of supplies,
  replacement of equipment, and the acquisition of new equipment in the
  area of breathing equipment.

       Distributes equipment to the various units and maintains records
  and files on their location, use, condition, etc.

       Attends training and seminars concerning breathing equipment in
  order to maintain and improve knowledge in the area.

       Keeps informed on the latest developments in the area of the use
  of breathing equipment in the fighting of fires.

       Operates equipment used to recharge self-contained breathing
  apparatus.

       When necessary, assists in cleaning and maintaining quarters,
  equipment and apparatus.

       Keeps needed records.

       May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
  and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency,
  office, or related units.

  REQUIREMENTS:

  LICENSE:

       Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in 
  New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee 
  mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the
  position.

       KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

        Knowledge of procedures for requisitioning materials,
  equipment, parts or supplies.

        Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of self-
  contained breathing equipment.

        Knowledge of the safety precautions and practices to be
  followed in the use, maintenance, and repair of self-contained
  breathing equipment.

        Knowledge of inventory control procedures.

        Ability to operate equipment used to recharge self-contained
  breathing apparatus.

        Ability to maintain, repair, and overhaul breathing equipment in 
   accordance with predetermined safety and specification standards.

        Ability to instruct others in the proper and safe use of breathing 
   equipment used in fires.

        Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written 
   instructions and directives.

        Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, and distribute needed equipment.

        Ability to maintain inventory of parts and prepare reports.

        Ability to record information in written form.

        Ability to perform duties without direct supervision.

        Ability to work closely with people, including functioning as a team 
   member.

        Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or
  manual recording and information systems used by the agency, 
  office, or related units.

        Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in
  English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.  American
  Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable 
  forms of communication.
