MECHANICAL INSPECTOR
DEFINITION
Under direction of the appropriate subcode official, inspects the
installation of new or replacement mechanical equipment installed
in Use Group R-3 and R-4; enforces the Uniform Construction Code
to ensure public safety, health, and welfare insofar as they are
affected by the installation of mechanical equipment such as air
conditioners, ventilation, heating systems, and water heating in
one and two-family structures; does other related duties as
required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Is responsible for the examination of plans for mechanical
equipment in Use Group R-3 and R-4.
Visits construction job sites and inspects installation of the
mechanical equipment as it relates to the manufacturer's
instructions and the relevant mechanical codes.
Initiates and enforces rules and regulations relative to the
mechanical code.
Prepares reports.
Establishes and maintains records and files.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
LICENSE:
Possession of a valid Mechanical Inspector's License issued
by the NJ Department of Community Affairs in accord with NJAC
5:23-5.19A.
NOTE: 1. Applicant must hold a valid inspector's license
in any other area licensed by the Uniform Construction Code. 2.
Successful completion of the examination requirements as required
by NJAC 5:23-5.23 - (a) Successful completion of the National
Certification Test 4A Mechanical 1 & 2 Family and (b) Successful
completion of the National Certification Test 4B Mechanical
General.
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties
of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of requirements of the Uniform Construction Code
pertaining to the installation of mechanical equipment and
related gas, fuel oil, and water piping in Use Group R-3 and R-4.
Ability to analyze and interpret provisions of the Uniform
Construction Code that apply to mechanical equipment and related
laws, rules, and regulations.
Ability to review plans and specifications for mechanical
equipment.
Ability to work harmoniously with other municipal unit heads and
with private contractors.
Ability to make thorough investigations and inspections.
Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate, and informative
reports of inspections and investigations containing findings,
conditions, and recommendations.
Ability to keep records and files.
Ability to provide testimony in court to prosecute violations of
the mechanical code in Use Group R-3 and R-4 structures.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in
English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as
acceptable forms of communication.
