 ARTS DIRECTOR

 DEFINITION

 Under  direction,  organizes and coordinates  orchestral,  vocal,
 dance,  art  and  sculpture exhibitions, or other  fine-arts  and
 cultural  programs and presentations; supervises the  performance
 of staff and volunteers; develops presentations combining current
 trends with cultural/artistic antiquities; does related work.

 An Arts Director may only be appointed in jurisdictions that have
 or  will  establish an ongoing fine arts program  which  spans  a
 twelve month period.

 EXAMPLES OF WORK:

 Researches exhibition possibilities and selects object and  items
 for exhibition; oversees display, care and handling of objects.

 Supervises the performance of assigned staff and volunteers.

 Requisitions supplies and equipment.

 Develops,  organizes and directs presentations,  programs  and/or
 performances  that  combine current trends with cultural/artistic
 antiquities.

 Develops budget for expenditures subject to approval of governing
 body; monitors appropriations and expenses.

 Develops and prepares proposals of cultural/artistic programs.

 Prepares  media  and  other  advertisements  to  promote   public
 awareness and interest in cultural/artistic programs.

 Prepares advertisements and conducts interviews and auditions of
 performers or exhibitors.

 Prepares correspondence and reports.

 Maintains records and files.

 Conducts research to keep current in cultural/artistic area of
 expertise.

 Attends and participates in conferences and conventions relating
 to cultural/artistic affairs.

 Will  be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or
 manual recording and information systems used by the agency, 
 office or related units.

 REQUIREMENTS:

          EDUCATION: AND EXPERIENCE:

           The education and experience of the applicant  will  be
 commensurate with the corresponding cultural/artistic area of
 expertise.

          LICENSE:

           Appointees  will  be  required to  possess  a  driver's
 license  valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a  vehicle,
 rather  than  employee  mobility, is  necessary  to  perform  the
 essential duties of the position.

 KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

 Knowledge of the methods and techniques used to develop, organize
 and direct presentations.

 Knowledge of the techniques used to develop and monitor a budget.

 Knowledge of the techniques used to prepare proposals.

 Knowledge of interview techniques.

 Knowledge of methods used to prepare advertisements.

 Knowledge of fine arts appropriate to the area of assignment.

 Ability  to  work  harmoniously with other staff and  departments
 involved in the presentation of a cultural/artistic event.

 Ability to supervise the performance of assigned staff and
 volunteers.

 Ability  to develop, organize and direct presentations,  programs
 and/or performances, and to combine current trends with those  of
 the past.

 Ability to develop and monitor a budget.

 Ability to develop and prepare proposals.

 Ability to prepare media and other advertisements.

 Ability to conduct research, interviews and auditions.

 Ability to prepare correspondence and other reports.

 Ability   to  utilize  various  types  of  electronic  and/manual
 recording  and information systems used by the agency, office  or
 related units.

 Ability  to  read,  write, speak, understand and  communicate  in
 English  sufficiently  to perform the duties  of  this  position.
 American  Sign  Language or Braille may  also  be  considered  as
 acceptable forms of communication.
