Job Specification

PUBLIC INFORMATION SPECIALIST 1 DIGITAL CONTENT 

DEFINITION:

Under the close supervision of a Public Information Specialist 4, Digital Content or other supervisory official in a local government agency, assists in the planning and execution of the agency’s digital/social media campaign; promotes the agency’s programs, activities, and events by utilizing digital and social media platforms; assists in monitoring and maintaining the agency’s website; researches and responds to basic or routine inquiries regarding website postings/content; does other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Prepares material used to publicize the agency’s programs, activities, and upcoming events.

Assists in converting written documents/communication to digital content using a digital content management system; assists in creating, modifying, and editing material as necessary.

Produces and edits simple video and multimedia content.

Prepares and posts digital content, photos, graphics, and other images and videos to the agency’s website, digital platforms, and/or social media platforms; ensures that all postings and media are valid, legal, and ADA compliant.

Performs quality assurance checks on work to ensure that all information has been uploaded properly and free of any technical issues.

Reviews and responds to comments and routine questions regarding postings/content from internal staff and external constituents.

Assists in monitoring and maintaining/updating the agency’s website, including reviewing, filing, and archiving expired postings and information; monitors digital content for accuracy; updates online forms, documents, and reports for the agency.

Gathers background material and information to be used for special projects.

Keeps current on best practices for style guidelines, new technology, tools, and platforms.

Prepares information for meetings, conferences, and other group meetings pertinent to the work of the agency.

Maintains logs of assigned projects and prepares status reports for the supervisor.

Maintains essential records, reports, and files.

Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

REQUIREMENTS:

NOTE: Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience. 

Five (5) years of professional experience in the dissemination of information in a public relations and/or public information program utilizing digital or social media.

OR

Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; and one (1) year of the above-mentioned professional experience.

NOTE: “Professional experience” refers to work that is analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range of basic knowledge of the profession’s concepts and practices; and is performed with the authority to act and make accurate and informed decisions.

LICENSE:

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of the methods and techniques used to collect and analyze information.

Knowledge of the agency’s programs, activities, and events.

Knowledge of the agency’s digital content management system.

Knowledge of the agency’s policies and strategies for digital communications.

Knowledge of public relations and advertising methods and techniques.

Ability to convert written material into clear and visually appealing digital content.

Ability to gather educational material and information pertaining to the agency’s programs, activities, and events.

Ability to effectively communicate in writing.

Ability to create, modify, and edit written and digital material.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, workgroups, outside agencies, and the public.

Ability to keep current on best practices for style guidelines, new technology, tools, and platforms.

Ability to monitor and maintain/update the agency’s website and update online documents.

Ability to review, file, and archive expired online postings and information.

Ability to prepare informative reports.

Ability to maintain essential records, reports, and files.

Ability to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
