ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST 1
DEFINITION:
Under the general supervision of an Environmental Scientist 4
or other Supervisor in a state department, institution or agency,
assists, as one of a team, in projects and programs in
environmental science; performs assigned toxicological work and
may have the responsibility for an assigned phase of a program;
does other related duties.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Participates in the development, organization and coordination of
environmental health programs.
Collects and evaluates data from laboratory analysis of
industrial hygiene and environmental air samples.
Provides scientific advice and assistance.
Researches scientific literature for information on the
toxicology of industrial and environmental chemicals, engineering
methods of control, and personal protection equipment.
Participates in the coordination of environmental activities
within the Division and its sub-units.
Identifies potential hazards resulting from environmental
pollutants.
Reviews toxicological data.
Participates in the development of environmental health
assessment programs.
Keeps current with trends of thought, literature and new programs
in environmental science.
Prepares correspondence.
Prepares technical and scientific reports or environmental and
other matters containing findings, conclusions, and
recommendations.
Maintains records and files.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a
Master's degree in one of the physical, biological or
environmental sciences.
EXPERIENCE:
One (1) year of experience involving research in the
application of the physical, biological or environmental
sciences.
LICENSE:
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license
valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential
duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the principles of environmental science and ecology.
Knowledge of the methods used to conduct research.
Knowledge of the ecological and toxicological effects of air and
water pollution.
Ability to coordinate activities with those of other units.
Ability to read and interpret laws rules and regulations and
apply them to specific situations.
Ability to read and interpret toxicological data.
Ability to identify potential health hazards resulting from
environmental pollutants.
Ability to work cooperatively as part of a group.
Ability to compile and analyze data.
Ability to prepare correspondence and reports.
Ability to maintain records and files.
Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or
manual recording and information systems used by the agency,
office or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in
English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as
acceptable forms of communication.
