Job Specification

ARCHITECT

DEFINITION

Under the general supervision of a Supervising Engineer, or other 
supervisory official in a state department, institution, or agency, is 
responsible for the development, design, and/or review of the design 
of buildings and facilities in various building construction programs; 
does related work as required.

NOTE:  The definition and examples of work for this title are for illustrative 
purposes only.  A particular position using this title may not perform all 
duties listed  in this job specification.  Conversely, all duties performed 
on the job may not be listed.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

From rough sketches, verbal information, and field observations, designs 
and lays out plans, elevations, sections, and details for hospitals, dining 
halls, power houses, and other state buildings, and develops these from 
sketch form to working drawings.

Develops complete details of various parts of the proposed buildings to 
assist the drafting technicians, estimators, inspectors, and contractors.

Takes part in negotiations and contracts with federal government which 
involves federal aid, priorities, approval of plans, release of materials, 
and the explanation and correction of engineering and technical detail.

Prepares accurate and informative reports.

Maintains essential records and files.

Assists in the development and preparation of preliminary architectural 
and mechanical drawings for proposed new building construction, additions, 
or alterations.

Assists in the collection of details and development of cost estimates for all
types of construction projects and maintains up to date records of building 
construction costs.

Under supervision, reviews plans and specifications prepared by outside 
architects.

Makes inspections and assists institutional personnel   with maintenance 
and construction programs.

Reviews architectural and mechanical drawings for proposed new building 
construction or alterations of hospitals, nursing homes, and other medical 
care facilities to determine compliance with codes and with regulations of 
state and federal agencies.

Makes site inspections to enforce compliance with the approved plans and 
prepares reports.

Estimates construction costs for health care facilities.

Gives advice to private architects, engineers, and others in the building 
industry covering the codes and regulations affecting the modernization 
of health care facilities.

Attends meetings and makes reports or gives information or testimony
concerning construction plans for health care facilities.

Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual 
recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office,
or related units.

REQUIREMENTS:

EXPERIENCE:

Three (3) years of architectural experience in the design of large and 
varied types of buildings and the preparation of architectural plans, 
drawings, and specifications.

LICENSE:

Applicants must possess a valid license or certificate as a Registered 
Architect issued by the New Jersey State Board of Architects.

Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in 
New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than   employee 
mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of science and art of architecture.

Knowledge of principles and procedures to be observed in determining 
the design of institutions of varied types.

Knowledge of technological developments in the field of architecture 
relating to the efficient and economical types of public institution buildings.

Knowledge of the means of obtaining information from other agencies to 
determine how architectural principles can be applied so as to best serve 
their needs.

Knowledge of the problems involved in the preparation of detailed drawings
for the use of drafters, estimators, inspectors, contractors, and others.

Ability to design varied types of buildings from rough sketches, verbal 
information, and field observations to ensure compliance with architectural 
principles and produce safe, economical, and efficient structures.

Ability to prepare and oversee the preparation of detailed plans, drawings, 
and specifications from designs.

Ability to prepare detailed drawings for the information and use of estimators,
inspectors, and contractors.

Ability to work effectively with associates, state department and agency 
staff, and others interested in or concerned with the design and construction 
of state buildings. 

Ability to make proper use of architectural equipment, materials, and 
supplies.

Ability to prepare accurate, technically sound, and informative reports of 
architectural matters containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.

Ability to maintain essential records and files.

Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording 
and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English 
sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.  American Sign 
Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of 
communication.
