INSTITUTIONAL TELEPHONE OPERATOR
DEFINITION
Under the direction of a supervisor in a state institution,
during an assigned shift, does the tasks involved in operating a
telephone system console; provides information or routes callers
to appropriate office or person; performs related clerical tasks;
does related duties.

SPECIAL SKILL
Applicants must be able to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in
Spanish and English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
At an institution telephone system console, during an assigned
shift, answers, and completes incoming and outgoing calls.
Completes outgoing toll calls and sends telegrams.
Ascertains the cost of and records outgoing toll calls and
telegrams in the log, and files individual receipts in order to
charge calls to the proper agency or unit.
Takes message accurately and see that they reach the proper
persons.
Dials outgoing calls when necessary.
Gives routine information and directs visitors.
When working at night, receives, and records telephone reports at
regular intervals from attendants, watchmen, and other designated
officers.
In emergencies, contacts proper institution officers.
Receives and signs for registered and insured letters and
packages.
Performs routine clerical tasks, including receiving and sorting
mail, stamping outgoing letters, typing reports, memoranda,
payrolls, and menus; does filing.
Maintains records.
May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
LICENSE:
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license
valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential
duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the mechanical problems involved in operating a
telephone system console in a state institution.
Knowledge of the usage involved in giving information
courteously, accurately, and clearly.
Knowledge of simple clerical routines.
Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written
directions.
Ability to learn quickly from oral and written explanations and
from demonstrations.
Ability to operate a telephone system console with speed and
accuracy.
Ability to comprehend the internal organization and policies of
the institution.
Ability to give accurate information in a courteous and
understandable manner, using accepted English and enunciating
distinctly.
Ability to remember names, dates, persons, and occurrences.
Ability to prepare bills.
Ability to do simple clerical tasks, including receiving and
sorting mail, stamping letters, and filing.
Ability to keep records.
Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or
manual recording and information systems used by the agency,
office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in
English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
