CLERK TYPIST 1, EVIDENCE-HANDLING
DEFINITION
Under direction of a supervisory officer performs evidence-
handling duties as well as clerical work including typing of
reports, documents, and correspondence; does other related
duties.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Secures evidence, such as body parts, bloodstained articles, HIV-
tainted materials, narcotics, firearms and body fluid samples.
Records (logs) evidence, such as body parts, bloodstained
articles, HIV-tainted materials, narcotics, firearms and body
fluid samples.
Places labels on specimens, samples, or evidence.
Collects (receives) evidence, such as body parts, blood-stained
articles, HIV-tainted materials, narcotics, firearms and body
fluid samples.
Stores evidence, such as body parts, bloodstained articles, HIV-
tainted materials, narcotics, firearms and body fluid samples.
Verifies receipt of evidence against source documents.
Distributes evidence to appropriate laboratory for examination.
Applies established security procedures and guidelines.
Applies appropriate safety procedures.
Provides testimony in court and other legal forums.
Interprets applicable laws, rules, policies, and regulations for
subordinates.
Proofreads material for accuracy.
Types legal, technical and/or statistical documents, reports, and
routine correspondence.
Compiles, tabulates, and interprets data and statistics.
Operates office machines and equipment
Prepares correspondence in accordance with established
regulations.
Maintains records and files.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and computerized information system used
by the agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
One (1) year of experience in clerical work including the
receipt, verification, recording and storage of evidence
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential
duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of chain-of-custody procedures.
Knowledge of procedures governing "rules of evidence."
Knowledge of methods for the safe handling of HIV-tainted
materials.
Knowledge of procedures for storing controlled substances.
Knowledge of general vocabulary and spelling.
Knowledge of legal terminology.
Knowledge of established safety procedures and guidelines.
Knowledge of established security procedures and guidelines.
Knowledge of procedures for processing evidence.
Knowledge of filing procedures.
Knowledge of recordkeeping procedures.
Knowledge of modern office methods, practices, routines,
machines, and equipment.
Ability to read and interpret laws, rules, and regulations.
Ability to provide testimony in court and other legal forums.
Ability to compare written or printed material for accuracy.
Ability to apply laws, rules, and regulations to given
situations.
Ability to operate a computer or other electronic word processing
equipment.
Ability to keep accurate records.
Ability to gather, compile, and analyze basic statistical and/or
technical data and to prepare reports and summaries in graphic,
tabular and/or written form.
Ability to read and interpret established policies, procedures,
and regulations of the organization.
Ability to type legal, technical and/or statistical documents,
reports and correspondence utilizing electronic equipment.
Ability to process requests for information in accordance with
established procedures.
Ability to prepare correspondence as assigned.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in
English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as
