 SUPERVISOR OF ACCOUNTS
 
 DEFINITION

 Under direction of a supervisory official, supervises a unit 
 of clerical employees engaged in maintenance of a system
 of accounts; does other related duties as required.

 NOTE: The  examples of work for this title are for illustrative
 purposes  only.  A particular position using this title  may  not
 perform all duties listed in this job specification.  Conversely,
 all duties performed on the job may not be listed.

 EXAMPLES OF WORK:

 Supervises a unit of clerical employees engaged in processing
 financial documents and maintenance of accounting records for
 appropriated funds.

 Assigns  and  instructs  employees, supervises  their  work,  and
 analyzes  unit  workload regulating work flow to  ensure  timely,
 efficient processing.

 Prepares  and  supervises preparation of statistical  and  fiscal
 reports,   books,   and/or  miscellaneous  accounting   or   cost
 accounting reports.

 Supervises  work  operations and/or functional programs  and  
 has responsibility  for  effectively  recommending  hiring,   firing,
 promoting, demoting, and/or disciplining of employees.

 Supervises  and  participates in processing of accounting  system
 forms and vouchers.

 Supervises deposit of revenue and funds collected.

 Supervises accounts payable records, and initiates correspondence
 and communication with private vendors.

 May  assist  in reconciling the Appropriation/Revenue  Accounting
 System reports, and analyzes and initiates correcting entries.

 Provides   advice  and  assistance  to  staff  on  problems   and
 procedures relating to the work of the unit.

 Will  be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
 and/or manual recording and information systems used by  
 the agency, office or related units.

 REQUIREMENTS:

 EXPERIENCE:

 Five (5) years of experience involving the operation and
 maintenance of a system of accounts, three (3) years of
 which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.

 LICENSE:

 Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
 valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
 than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential
 duties of the position.

 KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

 Knowledge of the bookkeeping and clerical accounting methods
 of the unit after a period of training.

 Knowledge of bookkeeping and clerical accounting principles 
 and methods and of  accepted practice for original entry in the
 collection of fees.

 Ability to organize supervisory bookkeeping, statistical, and
 clerical accounting and related work, and develop work methods.

 Ability  to  audit vouchers, authorize work to  be  performed  by
 authorization vouchers, and reconcile accounts.

 Ability to interpret rules and regulations pertaining to bookkeeping,  
 clerical accounting, and statistical work of the unit and to devise 
 procedures based thereon.

 Ability  to  supervise  the  maintenance  of  ledgers,  journals,
 subsidiary  accounts,  statistical  records,  cash  receipt   and
 payment records, bank deposits, and other records and files.

 Ability  to interpret and apply rules and regulations established
 for accounting and budget  purposes.

 Ability to supervise and train subordinate staff.

 Ability  to  provide  information to others concerning  fees  and
 accounts, and unit work and procedures.

 Ability to draft official correspondence.

 Ability to prepare statistical, financial, and other reports.

 Ability to establish and maintain records and files.

 Ability  to  utilize  various types of electronic  and/or  manual
 recording and information systems used by the agency, office,
 or related units.

 Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in
 English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.  American
 Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable 
 forms of  communication.
