Job Specification

STOREKEEPER 1

DEFINITION:
 
Under the close supervision of a supervisory official in a state department, 
institution, or agency or a local jurisdiction, assists higher level Storekeepers 
in receiving, storing, keeping inventory, and issuing supplies, parts, materials, 
and equipment; performs other tasks related to organizing the storeroom; 
does other related work as required.

NOTE:  The examples of work for this title are for illustrative purposes only.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Organizes assigned stock work. 

Helps with unloading and unpacking shipments from trucks and/or freight 
cars.

Issues equipment, materials, parts, and supplies when given requisitions 
or when other types of proper authorization are received.

Checks incoming shipments for conformity with orders and specifications 
and sees that stock is in good condition.

Sees that stock bins and racks are kept according to size, color, or other 
description and that a sufficient quantity of stock is on hand at all times.

Sees that stock is maintained in bins and on the racks in a neat, orderly, 
safe, and sanitary condition.

When requisitions are received, assembles stock for the order and prepares 
it for shipment.

Checks orders being packed for delivery for quality, proper packing, and 
sufficient postage.

Coordinates the weighing, tagging, and bagging of ingredients.

Sees that the stock areas are maintained in a clean, orderly, safe, and 
sanitary condition, including floors, shelves, bins, and racks.

Takes periodic inventories.

In an institution, takes the measures required to safeguard the health, 
welfare, custody, and safety of patients and/or inmates assigned to the 
stockroom.

Prepares reports.

Maintains a set of stock record cards.

Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or 
manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, 
or related units.

REQUIREMENTS:

EXPERIENCE:

One (1) year of experience in work involving receiving, storing, safeguarding, 
and recording parts, materials, equipment, and supplies of varied types in 
an organized storeroom.

LICENSE:

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey 
only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary 
to perform the essential duties of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of storage procedures and methods.

Knowledge of stock record keeping methods and procedures.

Knowledge of modern transportation, shipping, and packing methods.

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions and to learn 
quickly from oral and written explanations and from demonstrations.

Ability to unpack, unload, store, sort, label, and record incoming stock of 
varied types and to check the quality and quantity of stock received against 
orders and specifications.

Ability to see that bins, racks, and shelves are kept filled.

Ability to take the proper precautions required to safeguard stored equipment, 
materials, parts, and supplies from theft, loss, damage, and fire.

Ability to receive requisitions and see that stock is assembled for filling orders, 
that proper records are kept, and that the requested stock is properly packed 
for delivery and/or shipment.
Ability to assist in the taking of periodic inventories.

Ability to do simple clerical work and to prepare simple reports.

Ability to assist in maintaining a set of stock record cards.

Ability to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording 
and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently 
to perform the duties of this position.  American Sign Language or Braille may 
also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
