Job Specification

HAIRSTYLIST 1

DEFINITION:

Under the direction of a Hairstylist 2 or other supervisory official in a hospital 
or institutional setting, provides cosmetology-hairstyling services for patients, 
residents and/or inmates in the shop, parlor, or in the wards and cottages; 
does other related duties as required.   

NOTE:  The examples of work for this title are for illustrative purposes only. 
A particular position using this title may not perform all duties listed in this
job specification. Conversely, all duties performed on the job may not be 
listed.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Cuts, trims, washes, combs and styles hair. 

May bleach, dye or tint hair, using applicator or brush.  

Inspects and examines hair, skin and scalp for disease.  

Gives scalp and other hair treatments or, as dictated by the condition of 
the individual; may color hair or give different types of wave sets.

May perform beauty culture work such as manicures and pedicures.

May be required to attend to those non-ambulatory individuals by giving 
beauty treatments as necessary.  

Instructs individuals in the basic care and maintenance of hair and nails.  

Escorts individuals to and from the facility shop/parlor.  

Organizes assigned work and develops appropriate work methods.  

Maintains a clean and orderly work area.  

Follows established procedures to promote public health and prevent 
the spreading of disease.

Cleans the chairs, clippers, combs, scissors, razors and other instruments; 
sterilizes all instruments and tools of the trade in accordance with the 
regulations issued by the New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology and 
Hairstyling.

Keeps own person neat and clean at all times.

Sharpens razors, scissors and clippers, and lubricates instruments with 
movable parts.

Obtains, stores and safeguards equipment and materials.   

Observes at all times the provisions of the Patients’ Bill of Rights.

May be required to assist with other ward or cottage work on occasion 
when not performing haircutting or related services.

Maintains essential records and files.

May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or 
manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office 
or related units.

REQUIREMENTS:

LICENSE:

Possession of a valid license as a Cosmetologist-Hairstylist, issued 
by the New Jersey Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling.

Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in 
New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee
mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of the problems involved in the cutting and styling of hair.  

Knowledge of the proper use and maintenance of haircutting and 
styling tools, materials and equipment.  

Knowledge of relevant sanitation requirements and procedures.  

Knowledge of inventory control and shelf life expectancies of shop/parlor 
supplies, tools and equipment after a period of training.   

Ability to adhere to state and facility regulations, policies and procedures 
pertaining to cosmetology services.  

Ability to instruct individuals in the basic care and maintenance of hair
and nails.  

Ability to comprehend and carry out oral directions.   

Ability to effectively work with patients, residents and/or inmates in 
a hospital or institutional setting.   

Ability to work harmoniously with others.

Ability to cooperate with program staff at the hospital or institution.  

Ability to prepare simple reports.  

Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual 
recording and information systems used by the agency, office or 
related units.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand or communicate in English 
sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.  American Sign 
Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms 
of communication.
