CREW SUPERVISOR, ELECTRICIANS
DEFINITION:
Under direction of a supervisor in a state department, institution, or agency,
supervises a group of electricians and other employees engaged in the
installation, repair and maintenance of electrical equipment; prepares or
works with sketches, plans and specifications; works with tools and testing
equipment common to the trade. Supervises staff and work activities.
Prepares and signs official performance evaluations for subordinate staff;
does related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Develops and maintains work plans and procedures for the installation,
repair and maintenance of elevators, motors, wiring, cables, public address
systems, feeder systems, refrigerators, radios and other types of electrical
equipment, appliances, machinery and circuits.
Assigns work, gives written and/or oral instruction to the Electricians and
their helpers and supervises the performance of their work.
Inspects and supervises the inspection of electrical wiring, fixtures,
appliances, motors, generators, pumps, power circuits and controllers
of machines and elevators; sees that repair and installation work is done.
Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs and has
responsibility for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting,
demoting and/or disciplining of employees.
Supervises and takes the lead in the installation of electrical wiring,
cables, fixtures and appliances.
Sees that emergency electrical repair work is done.
When required, instructs the inmates of state institutions in simple
electrical work.
Orders, stores, safeguards and supervises the use and recording of
electrical equipment, materials, and supplies.
Prepares reports and records of equipment, personnel, time costs and
work completed.
In the Department of Human Services, may be required to undergo fire
training classes.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and computerized information systems used by the agency,
office or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
Four (4) years of experience in work involving the installation, inspection,
repair and maintenance of electrical equipment, appliances, machinery
and circuits.
NOTE: Applicants who do not possess the required experience may
substitute a current Electrical Contractor license issued by the New Jersey
Department of Consumer Affairs for three (3) years of experience.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey
only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary
to perform the essential duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the problems, equipment and techniques involved in installing,
inspecting, repairing and maintaining cables, wiring, motors, generators,
pumps, refrigerators, radios, sound equipment, oil burners and other types
of electrical equipment, appliances, fixtures, machinery and circuits.
Knowledge of the problems involved in making electrical work plans and
schedules.
Ability to supervise assigned staff and plan, organize and implement
projects within the unit.
Ability to give written and/or oral directions to employees assigned to
electrical work and supervise the performance of their work.
Ability to analyze problems involving electrical installation, inspection,
maintenance and repair work and develop effective work methods.
Ability to install, inspect, repair, and maintain cables, wiring, motors,
generators, pumps, refrigerators, radios, sound equipment, oil burners
and other types of electrical equipment, appliances, fixtures, machinery
and circuits and to supervise employees engaged in such work.
Ability to prepare estimates of electrical work and to keep records of
work done, materials used, personnel and time spent.
Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording
and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English
sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language
or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
