DATABASE ANALYST 2
DEFINITION:
Under supervision in one of the Data Centers, is responsible for the analysis, physical design, coding, testing, migration, and implementation of complex databases in various platforms; coordinates efforts with systems and programming staff assigned to application development projects; creates and updates data dictionaries for applications; does other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Prepares full, complete documentation to provide for operation, maintenance, enhancement, and monitoring of the database environments.
Codes, tests, and implements specialized routines for loading, accessing, retrieving, updating, and dumping modules and/or programs for databases.
Develops in conjunction with systems and programming and resource development staff testing procedures and data to ensure that database application meets user's specification, and assists in systems and acceptance tests.
Reviews data requirements for application systems and defines appropriate database/data dictionary structures.
Determines the logical and physical organization of data to meet storage and processing requirements of systems, documents the design, and tests it using sophisticated modeling and simulation techniques.
Consults with application system teams in service analysis as a prerequisite to the design and development of databases.
Provides technical assistance to various levels of data center staff in the analysis and design of databases.
Prepares clear, accurate, and concise technical reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
Maintains essential records and files.
Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a closely related field.
EXPERIENCE:
Four (4) years of systems analysis, applications programming, design, systems programming and/or database administration or analysis experience in the data processing field, two (2) years of which shall have been in database design, analysis, and/or implementation.
NOTE: A general Bachelor's degree can be substituted for one (1) year of experience in systems analysis, application programming, design, systems programming, and/or database administration or analysis.
NOTE: A specific Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a closely related field can be substituted for two (2) years of experience in systems analysis, application programming, design, systems programming, and/or database administration or analysis.
NOTE: A Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a closely related field may be substituted for three (3) years of experience in systems analysis, application programming, design, systems programming, and/or database administration or analysis.
Special Note Substituting Experience for Education:
Experience in the study of work methods and processes, the analysis of varied types of data, the design and preparation of systems and programs, the operation of multi-tiered computer systems and work in the data processing support areas of reporting control or reliability support may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis with thirty (30) semester hour credits being equal to one (1) year of experience.
NOTE: Evidence of formal training in Computer Science or Information Technology received from or evaluated by an accredited institution of higher learning may be submitted with your application. Applicants must provide documentation from the accredited institution that clearly outlines the training course(s) that are acceptable and the corresponding number of credit hours for the training to be accepted. In-house courses (such as training provided on the job or through the appointing authority) will not be accepted.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of electronic data processing platforms and software, and familiarity with Data Center practices, policies, and procedures.
Knowledge of database/data dictionary systems and applications including the software internals of at least one widely used database management system.
Knowledge of telecommunications systems as they relate to database management systems.
Knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in making estimates and analyses of the capabilities of existing and proposed databases used in application systems.
Knowledge of simulation and modeling techniques, particularly as used in database/data dictionary design and implementation efforts.
Ability to oversee and coordinate activities with staff of the systems and programming unit in the development of complex database/data dictionary information systems.
Ability to analyze problem conditions in the use of database/data dictionary systems, and to arrive at realistic solutions.
Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate, and informative reports and documentation on database systems, including creation and maintenance of data dictionary documents.
Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally with various levels of data center and department personnel.
Ability to maintain essential records and files.
Ability to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
