TECHNICAL ASSISTANT, MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS
DEFINITION:
Under supervision of a supervisory official assigned to a program or operational unit having responsibility for a specific, existing information processing system operation, performs technical functions in support of management information systems used to process varied types of financial, program, or other information unique to the unit; operates computer terminal or PC for information processing; installs, utilizes, maintains, and troubleshoots information processing systems and system software; organizes, inputs, processes, and outputs source materials, raw data, and processed data; sets up and maintains data bases and software files; performs file maintenance; provides technical information/assistance to other system users; OR, under supervision of a supervisory official in a client-server environment, performs the more basic and repetitive levels of help desk responsibilities; performs other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Ensures the security of data, software, and hardware.
Organizes raw data for input and maintains logs of all work requests to ensure timely processing.
Utilizes microcomputer control language in the input, processing, and output of data.
Utilizes store-bought software such as spreadsheets, operating systems, etc.
Performs less complex and repetitive assignments of tickets.
Assists on incoming calls and emails to the Enterprise Service Desk.
May provide guidance, when needed, to the Computer Operator Assistant.
Assists in providing and supporting end users with remote operations, applications and technical support.
Performs and coordinates staging of inputs and materials necessary to carry out complete production machine runs.
Recommends to supervisor the purchasing of output mediums such as special and stock forms and other supplies as necessary.
Sets up software files for maximum efficiency and updates same as necessary.
Maintains/updates the data base as required using applicable software.
Reviews machine outputs for accuracy/precision and corrects problem situations.
Interacts with unit staff and/or users to establish processing priorities and explains the capabilities and limitations of the installation's hardware and available software.
Notifies users on the completion of requested processing and availability of outputs.
May be responsible for distribution and/or routing of output.
When linked to minicomputer or larger mainframe, utilizes proper controls to ensure continued integrity of data.
Maintains hard copy and software files as necessary and is responsible for labeling disks or cartridges and keeping logs of the locations of files on these mediums.
Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION:
Completion of sixty (60) semester hour credits from an accredited college or university.
NOTE: Two (2) years of experience in the gathering, retrieval, maintenance, compilation, and distribution of technical information in a public or private organization may be substituted for the above education requirement.
NOTE: Twenty-four (24) semesters hours credits in data processing from an accredited college or university may be substituted for up to two (2) years of the required education and/or experience.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of office methods and procedures.
Knowledge of information processing, control functions, and workflow control techniques.
Ability to operate a microcomputer and its peripheral devices via supplied manual(s) and/or available training courses and to apply these skills to the unit's needs after a period of training.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, to all levels of employees.
Ability to prepare reports.
Ability to maintain hard copy records and files.
Ability to learn quickly from both oral and written directions and instructions.
Ability to learn and work within input/output control work procedures, practices, and documentation used in the organizational unit.
Ability to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
