BEHAVIOR ANALYST 2
DEFINITION:
Under the general supervision of a Clinical Psychologist or other
higher level supervisor in a State institution, community mental
health center, or other setting in a State department, is responsible
for basic or descriptive behavioral assessments and systemic or
analog functional analysis, and for the development, implementation
and monitoring of interventions involving basic, as well as, advanced
behavior analytic concepts and methods; Supervises Behavior
Analyst 1's and other behavior support staff; does other related
work as required.
NOTE: The examples of work for this title are for illustrative purposes

NOTE: Basic or descriptive behavioral assessments are
defined as those which examine relationships between environmental
antecedents, consequences and the frequency of the problem behavior
through naturalistic observations and interviews, with no manipulation
of variables. Incumbents record reviews to draw conclusions and
develop behavior intervention plans.
NOTE: Systemic or functional analog functional analysis is
defined as the examination of relationships between environmental
antecedents, consequences, and frequency of the problem behavior
through controlled manipulation of specific environmental variables.
Incumbents apply experimental design procedures of functional analysis.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Conducts descriptive behavioral assessments based on direct and
indirect observation under naturalistic conditions.
Conducts systematic (i.e. analogue) behavioral assessments,
including functional analysis, where the conditions of observations are
controlled through the manipulation of specific environmental variables.
Determines when systematic behavioral assessments are indicated.
This level of analysis may be employed when lesser means of
assessment fail to clearly identify behavioral functions and maintaining
variables.
Ensures that informed consent is obtained within ethical and legal
standards such as prior to conducting systematic behavioral
assessments that address potentially dangerous behaviors.
Interprets results of behavioral assessments and forms a working
hypothesis in developing ethical and effective behavior analytic
interventions for clients.
Designs and supervises basic behavior analytic interventions.
Develops and implements appropriate assessment and intervention
methods for use in unfamiliar situations and for a wide range of cases.
Prepares and submits factual reports of clients¿ participation,
progress and change and modifies behavior analytic interventions
as necessary.
Provides clinical and general supervision for behavioral staff in
lower titles.
Seeks the consultation of peers or more advanced practitioners
when necessary.
Designs and delivers basic, as well as, more technical instruction
in the aspects of Applied Behavior Analysis.
May assist in representing psychology staff in an official capacity
in contacts with other professionals, agencies and the community
serving on various committees of the organizational unit, serving in
a liaison capacity regarding professional matters, testifying in court
as an expert witness regarding behavioral analytic issues and
providing orientation concerning aspects of Applied Behavior Analysis.
Participates in and may coordinate, direct, or chair multidisciplinary
staff meetings whose function is to create individual behavior analytic
interventions for clients.
Teaches others to carry out ethical and effective behavior analytic
interventions based on published research.
Provides for and instructs staff in the application of crisis intervention
techniques in treating clients whose behavior threatens their own
safety or the safety of others.
Provides supervision in the preparation of clear, technically sound,
accurate and informative behavioral reports containing findings,
conclusions and recommendations.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office, or related units.
May be required to engage in lifting clients when working in a
setting, which provides direct services to clients who are non
ambulant, or who are semi ambulant and/or have severe physical
handicaps.
REQUIREMENTS
CERTIFICATION
Applicants must possess a certificate as a Certified Behavior
Analyst by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, Inc.
EXPERIENCE:
One (1) year of post Associate Behavior Analyst certification experience.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver¿s license valid in
New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee
mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the methods used to conduct descriptive and
systematic behavioral assessments, involving the manipulation of
relevant variables, in order to complete a comprehensive functional
analysis.
Knowledge of the problems encountered in performing behavior
support work with persons confined in institutions for the mentally
ill or developmentally disabled.
Knowledge of the routine and programs of an institution and
the practical problems involved in working with the mentally ill
or developmentally disabled.
Knowledge of the methods used to interpret the results of basic
or descriptive behavioral assessments.
Knowledge of the methods used to develop ethical and effective
behavior analytic interventions for clients.
Ability to identify those situations requiring the expertise of
more advance practitioners.
Ability to design and oversee the implementation of basic and
advanced behavior analytic interventions.
Ability to design and deliver introductory and/or advanced level
instruction in areas of applied behavior analysis.
Ability to provide clinical and general supervision to Behavior
Analysts in lower titles, as well as, other professional,
paraprofessional and clerical employees.
Ability to teach others the methods used to carry out ethical
and effective behavior analytic interventions.
Ability to instruct staff in the application of crisis intervention
techniques.
Ability to develop and implement appropriate assessments
and intervention methods for use in unfamiliar situations and
for a wide range of cases.
Ability to interpret the results of descriptive, as well as,
systematic behavioral assessments and develop ethical
and effective behavior analytic interventions for clients.
Ability to prepare accurate and informative case histories,
and assist with research studies, statistical and other reports
containing findings, conclusions and recommendations.
Ability to keep current with new developments, trends of thought
and literature in the fields of mental health, developmental
disabilities and applied behavior analysis.
Ability to learn quickly from oral and written instructions
and demonstrations.
Ability to assist in providing satisfactory leadership as
a professional clinician.
Ability to prepare accurate records of clients' progress, essential
records and other necessary reports.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
with supervisors, professional staff, work assistants, other
employees, and clients.
Ability to learn to utilize various type of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office,
or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English
sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign
Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms
of communication.
