TOURISM REPRESENTATIVE 3 DEFINITION:
Under direction of a supervisory official, in the Department of State, or within a local jurisdiction, assists in carrying out assigned segments of research and gathers data needed to support the work program for promoting the natural attraction, recreational, cultural, tourist, and historic areas of the state or a local jurisdiction to attract visitors and promote travel and recreation by residents within and outside the state or a local jurisdiction; does related work as required. EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Conducts research and gathers data needed to support the tourism program of the state and/or local jurisdiction.
Assists with those programs designed to interest people in visiting New Jersey or a local jurisdiction such as recreational shows, vacation expositions, camping promotions, resort shows, exhibitions, and conventions.
Assists in the development of questionnaires needed to provide potential recreational and other types of business concerns with pertinent socio-economic data.
Assists in surveying resort, historical, and cultural areas to inventory and highlight their advantages and promote their use by various means including broadcasts, brochures, and other media.
Assists with field and office work in attracting new lodging units, hotels, ski resorts, camping sites, and other recreational areas.
Assists in aiding and advising civic and business organizations on methods to promote local areas and places of interest.
Assists in the gathering of information while conducting visits to recreational, resort, and other areas in order to gather information.
Assists in public relations activities to promote the recreational and tourist advantages of the state or local jurisdiction.
Assists in presentations at recreational shows, expositions, promotional exhibitions, and conventions to explain the advantage of locating recreational and leisure activities within New Jersey or a local jurisdiction.
May assist with the implementation of various media outreach programs to promote tourism.
May assist with the implementation of marketing and advertising programs to promote tourism.
Maintains essential records and files.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
NOTE:Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester-hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience.
Five (5) years of professional experience in public relations, advertising, or promotional activities relating to the tourism and travel industry including contacts with tourist, travel, motel/hotel, and convention trade associations utilizing all forms of media (TV, radio, print and electronic).
OR
Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and one (1) year of the above-mentioned professional experience.
OR
Possession of a master's degree in Journalism, Public Relations, or a closely related from an accredited college or university.
NOTE:"Professional experience refers to work that is analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range of basic knowledge of the profession's concepts and practices; and is performed with the authority to act and make accurate and informed decisions.
LICENSE:
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of current national trends relevant to the promotion of tourism and recreation.
Knowledge of environmental or seasonal factors which could affect trade.
Knowledge of the methods used to identify existing and potential attractions, recreation, historic areas, and other points of interest for the promotion of travel and tourism.
Ability to keep abreast of current literature, developments, and national trends to aid in attracting visitors to New Jersey or to a local jurisdiction.
Ability to conduct field visits to resort, historical, and cultural areas to obtain information used to promote tourism.
Ability to conduct surveys on recreational, resort, and other areas used to obtain information to promote their use.
Ability to maintain liaison with civic and business organizations to assist in promoting local areas and developing programs.
Ability to maintain liaison with other public and private agencies who are aware of businesses seeking areas of relocation.
Ability to assist in presenting information at conventions and other meetings to promote recreational and leisure activities.
Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
