SOCIAL WORK SUPERVISOR 2 MEDICAL
DEFINITION
Under direction of a supervisory official in a state department
or agency, assists in the administration and supervision of the
health services of the agency including its physical,
psychological, psychiatric, and social care phases; does other
related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK
Plans, organizes, administers, and coordinates in accord with
established policies the various disciplines involved in the
agency=s social care program.
Ensures the provision of consulting field services to social care
staff on both broad and specific health problems related to
Medicaid recipients including provision of advice, assistance in
investigation/study of obscure/difficult health problems, and
interpretation of social ramifications related to varying
physical and mental health conditions.
Plans, conducts, and supervises orientation courses for newly
appointed staff which include contents related to illness, both
physical and mental, disposition of medical problems, and
provision of information about diseases common to Medicaid
recipients and their implications to normal life phases, the
meaning of illness, services which can be provided by the agency,
full use of resources, and relationships with the medical
profession.
Makes necessary contacts with and interprets agency policies to
hospitals, nursing homes, mental health clinics, representatives
of medical/nursing disciplines, and individual physicians,
psychologists, and nurses.
Locates and evaluates new facilities needed to ensure the
physical and mental well being of recipients.
Supervises the review of medical, psychological, and psychiatric
reports for the purpose of reaching decisions on health care
provision and social service activity.
Prepares forms and guidelines on social care for professional
staff and oversees systematic collection of data as a tool in
program planning.
Prepares correspondence in the course of official duties
concerned with policies/procedures as they relate to the social
care aspects of the Medicaid program.
Prepares statistical and other reports of the social care
program, containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
Establishes and maintains records and files.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a
Master's degree in Social Work.
EXPERIENCE:
Three (3) years of experience in social casework which shall
have included two (2) years of supervisory experience in a
welfare or health program.
NOTE: A graduate field placement in social work accredited
by the Council on Social Work Education may be substituted for
the one (1) year of indicated nonsupervisory experience.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties
of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of principles/practices/techniques of medical social
work and their application to a large scale program of Medicaid
recipients after a period of training.
Knowledge of the ethnic/social/cultural characteristics, customs,
and preferences of minority and other special groups after a
period of training.
Knowledge of the functions, responsibilities, and programs of the
agency after a period of training.
Knowledge of the fundamental and current literature in the fields
of health, psychology, and social care and recreation after a
period of training.
Ability to understand, analyze, and interpret laws, rules, and
regulations of the state and of the department or agency.
Ability to take the lead in planning and carrying out the
agency=s social care program.
Ability to help plan and participate in orientation and inservice
training programs.
Ability to make the necessary contacts with hospitals, nursing
homes, clinics, physicians, psychologists, nurses, and
representatives of medical societies.
Ability to take the lead in conferences and discussion groups and
to speak effectively to individuals and groups concerning
services rendered by the Medicaid program.
Ability to work effectively with associates, physicians,
psychologists, nurses, and agency personnel, and with those
members of civic, health, welfare, and education groups
interested in or concerned with the work of the Medicaid program.
Ability to make the required field trips and investigations.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working
relationships with members of the medical and
nursing professions, with varied local and other
agencies/groups, and with the general public.
Ability to help plan and assist in carrying out studies,
investigations, and research projects, to prepare reports
thereon, and to make effective use of information gathered.
Ability to draft correspondence.
Ability to maintain records and files.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in
English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as
acceptable forms of communication.
